Based in Cowes, Isola Di Capri is Philip Islands most well established Italian restaurant. Serving the islands best pizza and pasta it is both a favourite of locals and tourists alike. After giving the restaurant exterior an upgrade Isola approached studio-io to rebrand the restaurant to bring it into the modern age. The major consideration for this task was to make it feel authentically Italian whilst still feeling local.
The key task we gave ourselves was to give the restaurant title something to latch onto. Ultimately we wanted to imagine that Isola Di Capri as an actual location off the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
The process really started with researching antique Italian travel posters of the 1940s advertising travel destinations around Europe. Being the type obsessed nerds we are we wanted to create our very own version of typography featured in these posters. We also looked to the famous Amalfi Coast beaches landing on the striped beach umbrellas as an icon.
A full typeface was created featuring exaggerated proportions and striking geometry. This is present within the custom signage that sits proudly above the entrance to the restaurant. Additionally prints were made that mimic look and feel of the posters we originally drew inspiration from, although this time containing illustrations of local landscapes.
The end result is a contemporary identity that is a nod to nostalgic travel destinations.
